Toronto, also known as the "Gem City," is a city in Jefferson County, Ohio, along the Ohio River. As of the 2000 census, the city population was 5,676. The area was first settled in the 19th century, when it was known as Newburg's Landing. When the railway was built, however, the area's name was changed to Sloan Station. In 1881, after a vote, the town was incorporated under its present name. This was taken from the much larger Toronto, Ontario. Local sights include the Old Daniels Building on Main Street, the Old Opera House on Main Street, the first War Monument to commemorate the soldiers and sailors of America, the Newburg Landing and Ronald Mannings Park, and many other Historical Places in that area. The most famous people from Toronto are television actor Robert Urich, as well as Hall of Fame football player Clarke Hinkle (Green Bay Packers). |
