City to install new water meter readers

The city utilities’ department has begun upgrading its water and meter reading systems. As a result, the existing water meters will receive radio frequency interface units.

Each radio unit will automatically read the meter every hour and broadcast the reading every 15 seconds. Meter reading personnel will have the ability to receive the signal with their hand-held or mobile data collectors. This will allow the city readers to read more efficiently and concentrate their time on more productive tasks, according to officials.

The city has entered into a contract with Neptune Equipment Co. to provide and install the new system. Letters are scheduled to be sent during or around the first week of April notifying customers of the project and requesting them to call to schedule an appointment for installation. The installation normally takes a few minutes, and water service should not be interrupted. There is no charge for the service.

For information, call Water Superintendent Wayne Ruckman at (740) 537-2591.
